Perched at the western edge of the popular Pocono Mountains, Carbon County is home to high-quality outdoor recreational activities. Whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and hiking are just a few of the adventure sports enjoyed here by Carbon County residents and visitors. History and the arts come alive in Carbon County! Numerous historical sites and museums showcase our past and the musical and artistic talents found here. The Mauch Chunk Opera House is located in the picturesque town of Jim Thorpe. The Opera House is home to its own resident troupe and serves as a base for many cultural events, including art clinics and exhibits. Also located in Jim Thorpe is the spectacular Asa Packer Mansion, once home to industrialist Asa Packer. Packer founded Lehigh University and ran for President of the United States in 1868.

Packer's home, built in 1860 by European craftsmen, remains as magnificent as it was back then. Tourists often visit the mansion and marvel at its beauty and rich history. Looking for a quality education? You'll find it here in Carbon County, where it's one of our greatest assets. Five public school districts (along with one private school) all serve Carbon County. The county is also home to Lehigh-Carbon Community College and the Carbon County Area Vocational-Technical School.
